Karachi: 2 brothers convicted of murder
KARACHI: A sessions court on Tuesday convicted two brothers in a murder case. The court sentenced Aftab Hussain to life imprisonment and handed down a seven-year term to his brother Adnan Hussian after finding them guilty of killing Khalil Ahmed in July 2006.
The convicts were said to be associated with one of several criminal gangs operating in Lyari. Additional District and Sessions Judge (south) Javed Ahmed Keerio, who conducted the trial in the judicial complex of the Karachi central prison, pronounced his verdict after recording evidence from both sides.
The court also directed the convicts to pay Rs500,000 each to the legal heirs of the deceased as compensation.
The court in its verdict observed that the prosecution placed ample evidence in court against Aftab for killing the victim and Adnan for resorting to firing into the air and assisting the prime accused in the commissioning of the offence.
All the prosecution witnesses, including three eyewitnesses, had testified against the accused and their testimonies were corroborated by the medical and other documentary evidence, it added.
The court also extended the benefit of Section 382-B (period of detention to be considered while awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the criminal procedure code to the convicts.
According to the prosecution, on July 9, 2006 the accused resorted to firing into the air during a ceremony within the remit of the Kalakot police station. They gunned down Khalil Ahmed when he asked them to stop the firing.
The police arrested Adnan the same day while his brother was arrested in 2008. A case (FIR 200/2006) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of the deceased`s brother.
Aftab Hussain was produced in court in custody while Adnan was on bail and following the pronouncement of the verdict the judge sent them to prison to serve out the sentence.
