Constable shot dead in Shakrial area
RAWALPINDI: A police official was shot dead while his colleague was injured when an armed man suspected of murdering his wife in Shakrial area opened fire on the police party on Thursday night, police said.
The suspect, Shahzad Ahmed who was wanted by the police for alleged murder of his wife in 2005, managed to escape after shooting to death a police constable Mohammad Riaz 45 and injuring his colleague Bilal Hameed 25.
The incident occurred when a police party led by Constable Mohammad Riaz in plain clothes set out for a raid to arrest the suspect residing in Shakrial area. On seeing the police party, the suspect opened fire killing the constable on the spot. Both the policemen were removed to Benazir Bhutto Hospital where Mohammad Riaz constable was pronounced dead while his colleague Bilal Hameed was operated upon.
A doctor at the hospital said the deceased police official had already been dead when brought to the hospital as he had been hit with four bullets while another police official who sustained bullet injuries was out of danger.
The dead body was removed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) hospital for postmortem. Later the City Police Officer Azhar Hameed Khokhar visited the crime scene and formed police teams to arrest the culprit.
