Lahore: Policemen running gang of bike-lifters
LAHORE: Police investigators have unearthed a gang of policemen ‘serving’ at different police stations and involved in motorcycle-lifting, police sources revealed here on Friday.
Sources further said that the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ahmed Raza Tahir has ordered a department inquiry into the incident following at least five stolen motorcycles were recovered from the possession of policemen.
It was learnt on Friday that the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Staff (AVLS) of the Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA) police recovered stolen motorcycles from some bank officials and government servants during its campaign against stolen vehicles.
They also arrested the suspects who during preliminary investigations confessed to the investigators that they had purchased these motorcycles from police official, later identified as Shafaqat Ali (13728/C).
According to the sources, during further investigations it was learnt that Constable Shafaqat Ali posted at Iqbal Town police station for the last four years, had been running a gang of motorcycle-lifters. Later, the police team headed by DSP Aftab Phularwan arrested another policeman, identified as Constable Zaheer of Elite Police Force and recovered a stolen motorcycle from his possession.
Zaheer told the police that he had also purchased the bike from Shafaqat Ali, said to be a front man of SP Muntazir Mahdi, and had paid him Rs 28,000.
The police team later recovered another five stolen motorcycles from Shafaqat Ali but did not initiate any legal action against him. Sources said that DSP Aftab Phularwan conducted an inquiry into the incident and found Shafaqat Ali guilty in several motorcycle-theft cases.
But the police team that was investigating the case had given clean chit to the Shafaqat Ali after accepting huge bribe from him. In the meantime, a bank official namely Muhammad Shahid appeared before the CCPO and brought the matter into his notice. Similarly, Constable Zaheer also appeared before the CCPO and informed him that the police official Shafaqat Ali is running a gang of motorcycle-lifters.
He also noted in his application that Shafaqat Ali during his posting at Iqbal Town police, Shafaqat used to drive away motorcycles from Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park premises and later he sued to sell the stolen bikes to government employees.
The CCPO has directed SSP (Discipline and Inquiry) to carry out a detailed inquiry into the incident and submit him the report within days. Further investigations are underway.
