Karachi: During the last 10 months, 439 children were murdered and 486 others were injured in acts of violence against them, says a report.
A report of Madadgar shows that at least 2,747 children were subjected to violence or abuse during the last 10 months in the country. Some 136 children were raped, 93 sodomised and 194 sexually assaulted.
During the same period, 352 children were tortured, 72 trafficked, 169 went missing, 148 committed suicide, 90 were killed over Karo-kari, 334 kidnapped, 162 forcibly married and 72 children braved Vani.
Expressing concern over the growing incidents of violence against children, Madadgar founder Zia Ahmed Awan demanded of the government and civil society to play their due role for the protection of children’s rights.
“November 20 is celebrated in the world as the Universal Children’s Day, but sadly the state of affairs in Pakistan regarding children’s rights is worrisome.”
Awan said that the number of street children and child labours was on the rise, while millions of children were out of schools. He said the government, parliamentarians, judiciary, media and civil society should come forward to improve the condition of the child rights situation in Pakistan, as the rising trend of violation of children’s rights was giving the country a bad name.
