Karachi: A suspected car thief was killed and his accomplice arrested by police during an encounter in the Model Colony police limits on Wednesday.
Three armed men allegedly snatched a car from the Narash area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The owner immediately informed the police and a car-tracking company about the incident. Subsequently, patrolling employees of the tracking company received a message saying that the location of the car had been pinpointed to a railway track situated in Model Colony.
The tracker company employees reached the spot and located the car. As they approached the vehicle, the suspects opened fire. The employees retaliated and one of the car snatchers fell to the ground as he was injured in the shootout.
Upon hearing the gunshots, a mobile van of the Airport police rushed to the spot and saw the suspects attempting to make a run for it. The police managed to apprehend one of the suspects, while the other escaped.
During the initial interrogation, the detained suspect confessed to snatching the car. The police were taking his injured accomplice to the JPMC in a critical condition when he died.
The arrested suspect said his name was Imran, while the deceased was identified as 35-year-old Ali Akbar. However, the police have yet to disclose the name of the car snatcher who succeeding in escaping. Police claimed that they recovered a car with a fake number plate (GS-0541).
In a separate incident, the Gizri police arrested two bandits in an injured condition following a brief encounter.
The two motorcyclists intercepted a car and snatched cash and a mobile phone form a girl in the vehicle.
A policeman was passing through the area and saw the incident.
The bandits saw the police and opened fire, which resulted in a shootout between the cop and the robbers. Both suspects were injured in the gun battle.
During the initial interrogation, the suspects identified themselves as Rashid and Rayas. They were later taken to the JPMC for treatment.
