Islamabad: The guards of a commercial bank foiled a robbery attempt in Alipur falling in the jurisdiction of Koral Police Station and in the ensuing encounter between the guards and the dacoits one of the dacoits was killed by his accomplices, the police spokesman said.

The bandits entered into the branch of Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Alipur, soon after the bank opened on Wednesday morning. When the cashier was setting currency notes, the intruders tried to hold him at gunpoint, but the security guard, witnessing their activities, intercepted one gunman, said police sources, quoting the statement of the bank staff.

According to the bank staff, other members of the gang, smelling danger, tried to escape from the scene while shooting in the air, but the security guard of the bank, Mehtab Shah, chased them with a police constable, Muhammad Arshad, and tried to overpower one of the dacoits.

During scuffle, the bank guard and the cop overpowered him. In the meantime, his accomplices, standing outside the bank, started firing on the security guard and the policeman. A bullet hit the head of the gangster and he died on the spot, while other dacoits managed to escape from the scene comfortably in a grey Suzuki Mehran car.

The police spokesman said that SSP (Islamabad) Muhammad Yousuf Malik and SP (Rural) Faisal Bashir Memon reached the scene soon after the incident and collected evidence through local police team. The Koral Police have started conducting raids to arrest other gangsters as all dacoits have been identified, police claimed.

The dead body of the dacoit was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for autopsy as well as the DNA test to confirm his identity. Police claimed a major breakthrough into the case soon. SSP (Islamabad) Muhammad Yousuf Malik has constituted two teams headed by SP (Rural) Faisal Bashir Memon and SP CIA Chaudhry Liaquat Ali to search for the absconders.
