TTP commander among 9 held in Nowshera raid

NOWSHERA: Nine suspects, including a commander belonging to the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), were arrested during separate search operations jointly conducted by the police and law-enforcing agencies here on Tuesday, police sources said.

The sources said the first operation was carried out in Shaidu village where two militants, including Amin Mohammad alias Commander Toofan, hailing from Dir district and his accomplice Tahir were arrested.

The militants were trying to escape after learning about the launch of the search operation, the sources said, adding a laptop, CDs, some important documents and Rs0.1 million in cash were also recovered from their possession.



The detained commander was allegedly involved in targetted killings and was planning to stage acts of subversion in the area, the sources said . Commander Toofan was wanted in several cases. He operated in Swat where security forces conducted the operation Rah-e-Rast two years back to dislodge the militants.

The seven other suspected persons were arrested in Spin Khak village during a separate search operation. A seminary was also raided during the manhunt in the area, the sources said.

The sources added that five of the seven detained persons were released after being grilled at the Pabbi Police Station. However, two others identified as Qari Badiuz Zaman and Qari Asad were shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. Meanwhile, some local people said Qari Badiuz Zaman and Qari Asad were not involved in any illegal activity.
