Karachi: 6 killed as Lyari gangsters resort to extortion spree
KARACHI: At least six people, including two members of a Lyari gang war group, were killed in a violent clash that erupted in the Kalri area late on Monday night and continued till Tuesday morning. No arrests were made.
According to police sources, some members of a Lyari gang war group (Baba Ladla), including Ali alias Alooq Gawaderi, entered the Kalri area late on Monday night to extort money from residents. When they came to a Paan shop on Shah Waliullah Road in Juna Kalri, the shop owner, who is also a member of the Kuchhi Rabita Committee, started shouting for help. His supporters soon came to him to resolve the matter, but in the meantime the gangsters opened indiscriminate fire, triggering a gun battle.
During the crossfire, some passers-by suffered injuries and were taken to the Civil Hospital and the Lyari General Hospital.
In the meanwhile, more members from the gangster group entered the area and the clash took a violent turn, during which Abdul Rehman Hingoro suffered serious injuries while parking his vehicle at a nearby place. He, however, died on his way to hospital. The deceased was a producer at a private TV channel and resident of Hingorabad, Kalri.
The gangsters also kidnapped Illahi Bux, the owner of a medical store on Shahwaliullah Road, later tortured him to death and dumped his body near the Kalri Cinema. The deceased was a resident of Nayabad, Kalri.
The gun battle continued for several hours, during which a gangster identified as Jaffer Khan, a resident of Agra Taj Colony, was killed. Later, the gun battle stretched to Shah Waliullah Road and Juna Kalri, when Ali alias Alooq Gawaderi of the Baba Ladla group and his unidentified accomplice were killed and their bodies were taken away by their gang members in a vehicle.
Police said both the groups again clashed in Baghdadi and Kalri areas in the morning when the gangsters kidnapped two brothers, Abdul Sattar and Javed, from Hingorabad, Kalri. After some hours, the gangsters dumped Javed’s body at Kameela Stop in Baghdadi, while Sattar was still in their captivity.
SSP Naeem Sheikh of District South confirmed the killing of two gangsters, Ali alias Alooq Gawaderi and Jaffer Khan, and said that he had instructed the force to lead a targeted operation in Lyari and arrest those involved in the gun battle.
Initially, police conducted raids in Juna Kalri, Shah Waliullah Road, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Road, Khada Market, Dubai Chowk and Nayabad areas, while more raids and search operations were likely be carried out late on Tuesday night.
Anwer Ali, 45, was fired upon and seriously injured near the Garden signal near Juman Shah’s Mazaar in Soldier Bazaar on Tuesday night. He was taken to hospital, where he expired during treatment. The situation in Lyari remained tense till the firing of this report.
