Karachi: Man’s bid to fly to Canada in PIA plane’s washroom foiled
KARACHI: An interesting situation developed when a Peshawar-based passenger hide himself in the washroom of the PIA’s plane before its departure to Canada from Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) Friday morning, but the immigration staff deployed at the airport foiled the attempt and arrested him, sources in the FIA said.
During checking of PIA’s flight PK-781, which originated from Karachi and departing to Toronto, a passenger, identified as Asfandyar, hailing from Peshawar, boarded from Karachi for Islamabad as a domestic passenger. He remained in the aeroplane and went to the washroom to avoid any further checking by the immigration staff on reaching Islamabad and kept the washroom locked for more than two hours.
In the meantime, an immigration official, who was deputed to search the international flight, found the washroom locked. The official informed his immediate boss and reported to the immigration high-ups, sources said. He said that a man was hidden in the washroom when the immigration staff opened the door. The FIA, consequently, arrested the passenger and shifted him to the FIA Police Station.
During preliminary investigation, the suspect disclosed that he wanted to get asylum in Canada and had no way to reach there apart from the way he adopted. The FIA claimed that the action taken by the immigration staff saved the PIA from a heavy fine from the IAA (International Aviation Authority).
Director Immigration Inam Ghani, when contacted by this scribe, confirming the report, said: “We are trying our level best to control human trafficking at every level.” He appreciated the performance of the immigration staff, saying that they were doing duty to the best of their ability.
