Karachi: Cleric shot dead in Peerabad
KARACHI: A cleric running a Madrassa was killed in Peerabad Colony No-II on Monday morning. Police suspected a Taliban group behind the murder.
Maulana Anwer Iqbal Khalid, 55, owner of the Madrassa Faizul Aloom near Chaggi Hotel in Peerabad, which has more than 300 students, was on his way home after offering Fajr prayers when he was intercepted near Mohammadi Masjid by some unidentified men, who opened fire on him and fled.
Upon hearing the gunshots, Hamid, son of the cleric, who was present in the mosque, rushed to the spot, and, along with other worshipers, took him to hospital, where was pronounced dead.
Police, who seized empty shells of a 9mm pistol from the crime scene, said Khalid had been shot five times. They also recorded the statements of witnesses and relatives of the deceased. Hamid said his family hailed from Swat and had no enmity with anyone.
A senior investigating officer, on condition of anonymity, told The News that the cleric had been killed by some militant organisation. However, until the investigations complete, it would be premature to confirm the actual motive behind the murder. Further investigations are under way.
