Lahore: Yearly review Police claim high success rate in 2011
LAHORE: Lahore police investigators have claimed a high success rate in tracing and recording cases of murder and kidnappings for ransom in the city in 2011.
According to a handout issued on Tuesday, as many as 632 murder cases were registered, of which 493 were traced and a charge-sheet submitted in them at a success rate of 78 per cent. Fifty-three kidnap for ransom cases were registered of which 47 were traced and culprits charged at a success rate of 89 per cent. In other kidnappings, police claimed a success rate of 81 per cent in 2,397 cases, of which 1,940 were traced.
Police registered 2,363 car theft cases, of which 2,012 were recovered at a rate of 85 per cent. The success rate for motorcycle theft was, however, low. Of 5,470 stolen motorcycles, only 1,818 were recovered. In cases of vehicle snatching, police claimed a success rate of 44 per cent, as 814 cases were registered and 357 traced.
Police claimed 100 per cent success in action against drug peddlers. Police arrested all culprits wanted in 2,629 cases. As much as 100 kilogrammes (kg) of heroine, 863kg of hashish, 12kg of opium and over 10,000 bottles of liquor were recovered from those arrested.
Further, 188 gamblers were arrested and Rs355,000 were recovered from them. Eighty-five robbery and murder cases were registered, of which 37 were traced. An additional 1,927 burglary cases out of 4,193 were traced with the success rate at 46 per cent.
Police said they had busted 317 criminal gangs and arrested 1,117 culprits, recovering Rs390 million. They also arrested 21,748 proclaimed offenders in 2011.
