Lahore: Religious activist, guard shot dead
LAHORE: FORMER activist of a banned outfit and his security guard were killed while two others were injured allegedly by their rivals near Karol Ghati in the Gujjarpura police jurisdiction on Thursday.
Police have removed the bodies to morgue for autopsy but no case was registered till the filing of this report. The deceased were identified as Hafiz Tariq Muavia, 40, former activist of a banned outfit and his 25 year-old security guard Shoaib Akram. The injured were identified as Muhammad Saleem, 30, son of Ilyas, also a security guard and Ashfaq, a driver.
Hafiz Tariq and Shoib Akram died on the spot after suffering multiple bullet wounds while the condition of the two injured victims was stated to critical in hospital.
A police officer said that victim Hafiz Tariq had allegedly killed his rival Arif Butt of Bhaseen village in 2010. He said that Tariq was a nominated accused in that case but he was on bail these days.
On the day of the incident, Tariq along with his two security guards Shoaib Akram and Saleem and driver Ashfaq was going to the Sessions Court for the case hearing. As their car reached near Carol Ghati at around 10:30 am, four armed men ambushed the car and sprayed volley of bullets on them.
As a result, Tariq and Shoaib died instantly, an official of Rescue 1122 said. He added that the injured men were shifted to hospital where the condition of Saleem was stated to be critical.
SP Omer Saeed Malik told the media at the crime scene that Tariq had sustained around 12 bullets in various parts of his body which claimed his life on the spot.
Seconds after the incident, local shopkeepers shut down their shops as panic gripped the area over this violent episode of crime. Police after being informed reached the scene and removed the bodies to morgue.
Police investigators also collected forensic evidence from the crime scene. Special police teams have also been constituted to arrest the accused persons.
A police investigator said that Muavia was killed over the same old enmity but different aspects of the incident would be investigated. No case was lodged till the filing of this report. Further investigations will be carried after registering a case. Another police investigator told The News that they would also probe the matter keeping in view sectarian killing. However, he said that so far no such clue could be find out.
