QUETTA: An armed clash between security forces and armed elements in Chamaling has claimed more than six lives. Official sources said that armed elements attacked the security personnel on Monday when they were busy in setting up a check post.
Local official sources, while confirming the attack, said that many of the attackers had been killed and injured in retaliation. Non-official sources have denied that an attack on security forces took place. They said security forces had surrounded the entire area and began a grand operation, using heavy explosives and weaponry. They added that fear and panic ruled in the area.
They added that security forces had also arrested numerous persons and shifted them to unknown places for interrogation.
On the other hand, security sources said that troops were attacked by unknown elements, due to which 10 of them were killed while questions on official casualties were parried.
It is pertinent to remember that a clash between security forces and dissidents occurred at this very spot, during which 14 security personnel were killed. The BLA (Baloch Liberation Army) had accepted the responsibility, claming that 40 security personnel had been killed.
The Chamaling region is known for its coal deposits. The Musharraf government had initiated a project in 2007, which was strongly resisted by the dissidents.
