Karachi: Suspected robber killed
KARACHI: In what appeared to be yet another incident of vigilante justice, a suspected robber was beaten to death after being shot by an angry mob in the Shershah area late on Tuesday night.
Police had been alerted that a robbery was taking place in a lane of the Urdu Bazaar. The law enforcers reached the scene and saw Shahzad Lashari being beaten by people. The police managed to rescue the man, who had also been shot, and took him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Shershah Zawar said that Lashari was a robber, who along with an accomplice was robbing citizens. However, the robber was overpowered by locals, who started beating him with sticks and iron rods. Just then, a man from the mob shot him and vanished.
The police recovered a pistol and a snatched motorcycle. The deceased was a resident of Lashari Mohallah in Jahanabad of Lyari. In a separate incident, an unidentified man, between 40 and 45 years of age, was found dead in the Darakhshan police limits. The body was found lying near an empty plot situated on Khyaban-e-Faisal in Phase-VIII of Defence Housing Authority.
SHO Darakhshan Mohsin Moshadi said that a patrolling mobile transported the corpse to hospital for an autopsy. A medical examination revealed that a head injury was the cause of death.
SHO Mohsin said that the man was wearing blue shalwar kameez, and a diary and Rs500 were found in the pockets of his dress. He added that the deceased seemed to be a labourer.
The police suspected that the man had been run over by a vehicle. However, they said they were looking at a number of lines of inquiry to establish what had exactly happened.
