Karachi: PPP, ANP, ASWJ activists among five killed
KARACHI: Five people, including activists of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Awami National Party (ANP), were killed in incidents of target killings in various parts of the city on Tuesday.
PPP activists Daad Rehman and Soomar were killed while six passers-by, including two women, injured when two men riding a motorcycle lobbed a hand grenade at a PPP office on Faqeer Muhammad Dura Khan Road in the Kalakot area of Lyari late on Tuesday night.
Members of the public present at the scene took the injured to the Civil Hospital, where Rehman and Soomar succumbed to their injuries. The injured included Aqib 15, Qasim 45, Naseem 35, Robina, 35, and Nazia, 18.
After the incident, tension gripped the area, where miscreants resorted to aerial firing, forcing shopkeepers to close their businesses. Meanwhile, PPP activists and leaders reached the hospital where they launched a protest and alleged that their rival group had attempted to disturb law and order in the city.
Investigators termed the attack on the PPP office part of targeted violence. Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and forensics staff cordoned off the area and collected evidence. They found particles of the hand grenade and seized goods damaged in the office for forensics tests. The deceased were the office-bearers of the PPP office (PS-111) and lived in Lyari. In another incident of target killing, Qari Asghar was gunned down in the Surjani Town police limits. This incident also occurred late Tuesday night on L-1 Road of Surjani Town.
Police said Asghar was a local leader of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat. He was heading towards Khuda Ki Basti on his motorcycle for some work when two men riding a motorcycle shot and injured him near a marriage hall and escaped.
The injured was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Later, ASWJ leaders and activists reached the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they protested over the killing of their leader and accused their rival group of the murder.
Tension developed in Godraan Society and Surjani Town areas where armed men resorted to aerial firing and had shops closed. Investigators termed Asghar’s murder a target killing, and added that police found empties of a 9mm pistol and sent them to the forensics department for testing. The deceased was a resident of Godraan Society and married.
Meanwhile, Afsaar Khan was gunned down in the Peerabad police limits. Police said that the victim was a labourer. He was present in Niazi Colony when two assailants riding a motorcycle appeared there and shot and injured him.
The injured was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators said that the deceased had no affiliation with any group. In yet another incident of target killing, an ANP leader sitting in a hotel when he was shot dead by two assailants riding a motorcycle at Lasbela Chowk in Jamshed Quarters.
The victim was identified as Gul Zaman. He was president of his party’s office in Jamshed Quarters. Tension spread across the neighbourhood, where aerial firing continued into the night after the incident.
