Lahore: Robbers kill 2, injure 5 on resistance
LAHORE: Robbers killed two citizens, injured five others and robbed over 300 Lahorites of valuables, gold ornaments, cell phones, cash, cars and motorcycles worth millions of rupees during the first two weeks of the current month.
Robbery victims, including traders, staged protest demonstrations in Model Town, Iqbal Town, and Saddar police divisions against police on their failure to control incidents of crime against property.
Residents of Shah Kamal in Wahdat Colony police limits staged a protest demonstration by blocking the main road over increase in incidents of street crime and house robberies. Police gave protesting victims ‘lollipops’ by assuring them to trace robbers soon but nothing concrete could be done so far.
Traders of Ichhra and Kahna areas staged separate protest demonstrations against police on their failure to control robberies. DIG Operations along with SP Model Town also held an open court to soothe the angry traders and warned the SHOs of strict action if they failed to control crime within 2 weeks. However, incidents of house robberies and street crime could not be controlled in Nishtar Colony, Kahna and Ichhra areas as three traders were also shot at and injured by the robbers on resistance.
During the last week, residents of Saedpur in Sabzazar police limits also staged a protest demonstration against police, terming them incompetent to control crime against property. Sabzazar police remained busy in Kharak building collapse incident for the whole week but failed to arrest the factory owners in time and the delay in arrest helped them secure bails from court.
Moreover, Lahore Police have, once again, started ‘staging real encounters’ as around four accused robbers had been killed by Shadbagh, Nawab Town and Township police limits during the last two weeks. One of the accused robbers identified as Tanveer Arif, 23, who was killed by Nawab Town police, was a student of the Punjab University.
It is learnt that the IGP has taken notice of increasing police encounters and directed the committee concerned to verify encounters held during the last one month. However, action against officers of the Lahore Police involved in staging fake encounters would still remain a dream for the IGP as the accused officials know how to ‘manage’ the killed accused robbers’ families for withdrawing cases against them as it was done in Shahbaz Butt’s Nishtar Colony fake encounter case.
However, robbers continued looting spree in the provincial metropolis and killed two persons on resistance in Gulshan-e-Ravi and Defence-A police limits. A 65-year-old security guard, named Aziz, was killed by robbers in Tauheed Park, Gulshan-e-Ravi on resistance on February 4, 2012 while a retired official of a secret agency, named Col (retd) Sarwar, was killed in Defence-A. Investigation Police of Gulshan-e-Ravi could make any development in the incident so far. The IO said that the situation was still not clear that who had killed such an old man of 65 years of age.
However, he admitted that the accused killer(s) had taken his gun but he (IO) was still declaring the incident a murder case as operations police had also registered FIR No 130/12 of the incident only under Section 302 of the PPC. Incharge Investigation Defence-A police Ghulam Hussain Gondal claimed that house servant, named Saifur Rehman, was involved in the killing of Col (r) Sarwar during a dacoity bid. A case number 123/12 was registered under sections 302 and 392 of the PPC. It is learnt that Defence-A police had also nabbed the accused servant and interrogating him for further action.
Robbers had also shot at and injured two persons, including a woman, in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Millat Park police limits.
During the last two weeks, Iqbal Town Division was calculated on top with over 65 reported incidents of house robberies, street crime, car and bike snatching/theft out of which 20 motorcycles and six cars were also taken away.
Model Town Division was calculated on second number with 63 reported incidents out of which 12 motorcycles and over 13 cars were also taken away. Three traders, named Muhammad Ali, Shaukat Ali and Syedan, were shot at and injured in Ichhra on resistance.
City Division was calculated on 3rd number with 60 reported incidents out of which 13 motorcycles and 10 cars were also stolen or snatched. Islampura and Shahdra police proved save heaven for the robbers.
Cantt Division was calculated on fourth number with 55 reported incidents out of which eight motorcycles and six cars were also taken away. Tremendous increase in house robberies and street crime was observed in the Defence police limits.
Saddar police division was calculated on 5th number with 45 reported incidents out of which five motorcycles and four cars were also taken away.
Civil Lines Police division remained last with 30 reported incidents out of which three motorcycles and four cars were also taken away.
It is worth mentioning that SP Mobiles has failed to ensure immediate response of Mujahid Squad to Rescue 15 emergency calls as a large number of robbery victims have complained that police never reached the crime scene in time despite making calls thrice.
