Karachi: Notices issued in journalist murder case
KARACHI: An anti–terrorism court on Wednesday issued notices to the prosecutor and the counsel for a complainant in a case pertaining to the murder of a television journalist.
Five accused – Faisal Mahmood alias Nafsiati, Syed Mohammad Ali Rizvi, Shahrukh alias Mani, Naveed alias Polka and Shakil alias Malik – have been charged with the murder of Wali Khan Babar, a reporter of a private TV channel, on Jan 13, 2011 within the remit of the Supermarket police station.
The defence counsel moved an application and contended that the complainant’s counsel, Arshad Iqbal Cheema, was the special public prosecutor of the administrative court of all the anti–terrorism courts in Karachi when the accused were arrested and charge-sheeted. Thus, he said, Mr Cheema could not stand for the complainant party.
Judge Ghulam Mustafa Memon of the ATC–III issued notices to the public prosecutor and the counsel for the complainant to argue on the plea on March 15.
A case (FIR 8/2011) was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti–Terrorism Act, 1997.
