Karachi: Senior police official booked for robbery
KARACHI: Although it is the responsibility of the police to protect the lives of ordinary citizens, sometimes it is the law enforcers themselves that are involved in crime and proof of this is that a superintendent (SP) of police was charged in a robbery case on Sunday.
According to sources, the police received information on Sunday night that a dispute broke out over the possession of a plot near the Haji Allah Baksh Colony of Sohrab Goth.
When the law enforcers reached the scene of the disturbance, they were surprised to find a car bearing a Sindh Police license plate. Perhaps an even greater shock for them was when they saw SP Zakir Piprani, along with four other men, beating up a man named Mohammad Afzaaluddin. The cops said they managed to rescue the badly injured victim from the clutches of his attackers, but added that SP Piprani managed to flee the scene.
However, some sources tell a different story and allege that the accused SP was arrested from the scene of the crime, but was released after the intervention of another senior police official.
The victim, in his statement, said that he was being forced to vacate a plot that he owned by SP Piprani and his men.
Afzaaluddin added that when he resisted, the SP and his associates beat him severely, breaking two of his teeth. The victim also accused the suspects of snatching Rs21,000 and his cell phone.
SHO Sohrab Goth Abdul Ghaffar Jumani said a robbery FIR was lodged on the complaint of Afzaaluddin against SP Zakir Hussain Piprani, along with four of his accomplices, who were identified as Mohammed Naseer, Zameer Ahmed, Abdul Haq and Anwer.
He added that the SP Piprani is still at large, however, the police arrested Naseer, Zameer, Haq and Anwer and recovered the looted Rs21,000 and cell phone. Earlier this month, another police official was arrested in an extortion case.
