Karachi: Cop, robber killed in Burns Road encounter
KARACHI: A police constable and an alleged robber were killed in an encounter on Burns Road in the early hours of Thursday morning. The shootout began when two robbers opened fire on Arambagh police on patrol after the police saw them robbing a milk shop owner, Zameer Yaseen. The gunfight killed one of the robbers and wounded Constable Muhammad Yaqoob, 52, and a 20–year–old passer–by, Kamran. The other robber managed to flee, however.
The police took the injured and the dead to the Civil Hospital, where Constable Yaqoob died. He was a father of five. The police claimed that they had recovered Rs10,000, which the robbers had looted from the shop owner, and a snatched motorcycle.
On the complaint of Yaseen, the police lodged an FIR against the suspects. Sindh’s inspector general of police, Syed Mushtaq Shah, offered the funeral prayers for Constable Yaqoob. He announced two million rupees in compensation for the grieved family, and a job for a member of the family. The family will also get the salary and allowances of the slain cop.
