2 ‘extortionists’ arrested in Karachi
KARACHI: The personnel of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) claimed to have arrested four suspects for their alleged involvement in extortion, bank robbery and murder cases. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Additional Inspector General of Police, Karachi, Akhtar Hassan Khan Gorchani said that the SIU’s Anti Extortion Cell received 15 complaints of extortion following which DIG Investigation and SSP SIU (Karachi) were given the task to nab the suspects.
Presently, the SIU team was investigating such cases, including the case of Ali Khan who runs a godown of school bags in Arambagh area, and acting on a tip off the SIU personnel conducted a raid in Saddar area and arrested Mohammed Anwer alias Zubair and Saeed alias Naeem.
During interrogation, the suspects disclosed that a few weeks before they had demanded extortion from a shopkeeper in Urdu Bazaar, namely Shahzeb son of Mujahid.
They revealed that when Shahzeb refused to pay them extortion they targeted him near his shop in Urdu Bazaar. They further disclosed that they also demanded extortion from flower shops situated near Teen Hati and upon their refusal they attacked these shops in which one shopkeeper was injured.
The suspects also confessed to extorting money from Basheer, owner of schoolbags godown in Khamoosh Colony; Nizaam, who also owns schoolbags godown in Liaquatabad; Basheer Mohammadi, a trader in Liaquatabad; Aslam Mallah, who runs business in Firdoos Colony and others.
AIG Gorchani said that eight out of 15 complaints received by the Anti Extortion Cell had been detected.In another raid the SIU personnel arrested Asif and Mohammed Anees and recovered a pistol, a repeater, a car and a motorcycle from their possession. Gorchani said that the suspects were involved in Mehran Bank heist in Nazimabad that occurred a few weeks ago.
According to him, the repeater recovered from the suspects was snatched from a security guard of the bank and the police also recovered Rs 0.1 million looted amount from their possession.
