Karachi: Ex-MDA official killed in sectarian attack in jail
KARACHI: In what is the second case of armed assault to take place in Karachi’s Central Jail in the last week, Bisharat Hussain Zaidi, a former Assistant Director of the Malir Development Authority (MDA), was stabbed to death by an activist of a banned militant outfit.
The Inspector General (IG) of Prisbons Sindh Ghulam Qadir Thebo has formed an inquiry team under the Supervision of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sukkur Jail and has also suspended the Assistant Superintendent Jail along with two of the jail’s wardens.
Thebo said that late on Sunday night he received information received that a prisoner had been brutally stabbed inside the Security Ward of Central Jail. The jail superintendent and a number of wardens immediately rushed to the Security Ward, where they found an injured Bisharat Hussain Zaidi and another prisoner, Mohammed Ahmed, who was carrying a sharp object.
Zaidi died while being rushed to the Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, police officials detained the accused, confiscated his weapon and shifted him to the Bundh Ward of the jail. During investigations it was revealed that Zaidi was a former Assistant Director in Malir Development Authority (MDA), and that he had been arrested in a corruption case last year. He had been sent to jail on September 26th, 2011, and was under imprisonment in a local barrack that had been formed for prisoners involved in corruption charges and other minor crimes.
IG Thebo said that two days ago they had found a cell-phone on Zaidi, after which they had shifted him to the Security Ward to keep him under observation.
Thebo mentioned that during Zaidi’s stay at the Ward, he had been sent to the jail hospital on Saturday evening on account of a health issue. He was released from the hospital on Sunday and shifted back to the Security Ward immediately after.
He added that the jail staff had also shifted another prisoner, Mohammed Ahmed alias Umair, to the Security Ward. Mohammed Ahmed allegedly belongs to banned religious outfit, and had been imprisoned for the past five years under charges of murder and kidnapping for ransom.
The two prisoners got into an argument on Sunday night, which prompted Ahmed to take out a sharp object which he used to stab Zaidi on his neck, face and chest.
The murder weapon was a sharp steel object which the accused had prepared by whetting on the floor. The police have lodged an FIR at the New Town police station for the murder of Zaidi in Central Jail against the accused Mohammed Ahmed.
Zaidi’s body was handed over to his brother Taqi Hussain Zaidi on Monday morning after legal formalities were completed.
IG Jail Sindh said that he had suspended the Assistant Superintendent Jail Zulfiqar Peerzada and two wardens who had been deputed at the ward. The IG Jails Sindh has also ordered departmental inquiry into the matter under the supervision of DIG Sukkur Jail.
Thebo added that the committee should also consider why the jail staff had put Zaidi in ward with just one other prisoner, as it is a rule that a minimum of three to four people be in the Security Ward to avert altercations of just this nature.
“The police will be looking into the possible involvement of jail staff in this regard,” Thebo explained.
It may be noted here that on March 20th, a clash took place in Central Prison Karachi, in which Eshaan, along with other activists of the banned Jundullah, attacked another prisoner, Kamran alias Ganja, with a sharp object.
The assailants were trying to slaughter Kamran, but he was saved by the jail staff. The incident on Sunday is the second case of violence to be reported from Central Jail Karachi in the last week.
