Karachi: Man remanded over rape of ‘13-year-old bride’
KARACHI: A man was brought before court on Wednesday with a medical report proving that he raped a 13-year-old girl, who was forced into marrying him after being abducted with the help of her aunt. “An FIR was lodged by the girl’s father, Syed Hameed Hassan, on March 24 in which he claimed that his daughter had gone missing,” said Station Investigation Officer (SIO) Jamal of the Surjani Town police.
The teenager could not be found when her father, a labourer, returned home from work on March 22. He was told by other family members that the girl had not returned after leaving the house with her aunt Robina Minhaj. “I tried to locate Robina, who is my younger brother’s wife, but in vain,” Hassan said.
Later, it was found that the girl was incarcerated in the house of Naveed, another resident of the same area of Ghulam Nabi Brohi Goth of Surjani Town. “When I tried to get into Naveed’s house, I was thrashed and pushed away. He said she was not there.” He said Naveed’s behaviour had further consolidated his suspicion that the man was somehow involved in the crime.
Consequently, an FIR was lodged on charges of abduction and rape.“Naveed was arrested after his house was raided on the very day the FIR was lodged. The girl was recovered from his house,” said SIO Jamal. Both Robina and her husband were also detained.
In her statement to the police, the victim said that her aunt visited the house and told her she wanted to buy some clothes for her for which she would have to accompany her. After leaving home, she was taken to Naveed’s residence and locked inside a room.
“My uncle was also present there.” “I was told that I am to be married to this man, Naveed, and ordered not to make any noise otherwise I would be killed,” she said. The victim told the police that a Maulvi was called to perform the marriage rites.
During investigations, the girl was sent to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a medical examination, which confirmed that she had been raped, said SIO Jamal. Naveed is now in judicial custody till April 10.
