Lahore: Doc’s ‘negligence’ leaves family’s sole breadwinner disabled
LAHORE: The alleged negligence by a doctor at the Orthopaedic Ward of the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has rendered a sole breadwinner for his family virtually disabled. According to details, Zafar Iqbal, aged 62 and a resident of Sanda, is in a miserable condition after allegedly bad operation conducted by a junior doctor at the Orthopaedic Ward of the hospital, while refusal to correct this negligence has ruined his life.
Zafar Iqbal alleged that a junior orthopaedic surgeon had fixed a large femur head/ball in the femur socket, which not only ceased his mobility but also broke femur or thigh bone. He alleged that senior professors didn’t supervise the operation, which had terribly gone wrong paralyzing him for life.
Earlier, he said that he had suffered a fracture at hip joint after falling from height and got admitted in Orthopaedic Ward of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on 16.10.2011 and was operated upon by a junior surgeon on October 27, 2011. He said that he had continued to complain about severe pain after the operation, but the doctors discharged him from the hospital November 15, 2011 ignoring his complaints.
He said that later on, he consulted with several other doctors, who recommended replacement of the bigger femur ball with a smaller one size.
He said that he never recovered from pain and remained bed-ridden for almost four months, adding that he again visited the hospital and was admitted on March 3 2012 on the recommendation of Medical Superintendent of the hospital, who directed the Department of Orthopaedics for proper treatment of the patient.
While narrating his ordeal during his second admission at the hospital, he again alleged non-cooperation by the orthopaedic surgeons, saying that they refused to replace femur head with a proper size femur ball. All they did was to offer him removal of the femur head from the hip joint, implying to leave him walking on crutches for the rest of his life.
Later, he said that an associate professor discharged him on March 31, 2012 upon his refusal to get the larger size femur head removed as he believed that the doctors wanted to remove proof of their alleged negligence. “The doctors gave reason that the operation was not feasible due to infection,” he informed but added that the doctors did not prescribe any medicine to treat infection.
When contacted, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Medical Superintendent Dr Ijaz Sheikh promised to conduct an inquiry upon the request of the patient to ascertain the facts regarding the surgery after listening to the view of the orthopaedic surgeons as well and then fix the responsibility upon finding any negligence in this regard. He also assured to provide proper treatment to the patient for recovery.
