Karachi: Inspector Mehsud booked in another case
KARACHI: Seven activists of Tehrik–e-Taliban (TTP), including Inspector Azam Mehsud, have been booked under murder and terrorism charges in connection with the attack on a police party in Sohrab Goth area early Sunday morning. The attack left a policeman dead, and two cops and a civilian injured. Police sources said that despite nomination of Inspector Azam Mehsud in two cases lodged under Section–7 of Anti Terrorism Act (ATA) the Sindh Police had not yet expelled him from the Police Department.
Earlier, Model Colony police station had lodged FIR No. 48/12 against wanted TTP terrorists Sher Zaman Mehsud, Zubair Mehsud and their brother Inspector Azam Mehsud following suicidal attack on SSP Rao Anwar Ahmed of District Malir.
SSP Anwar said that during investigation into the incident they received credible reports that the nominated terrorists were seen in Sohrab Goth area and they were planning another attack on police officials, including him.
In this regard, personnel from Police Headquarters Malir (PHQ) were deployed in Sohrab Goth area during which the terrorists attacked the police party, as a result Constable Rizwan was killed and several cops sustained injuries. Consequently, Sohrab Goth police station lodged an FIR on the complaint of SI Malik Javed.
In his complaint, SI Javed stated that he was present in Al-Asif Square area with the additional force which was called from PHQ Malir for locating the suspects nominated in FIR No. 48/12 of Model Colony police station, including Inspector Azam Mehsud and his brothers, who also used to provide logistic support and shelter to the TTP activists and leaders.
In the meantime, Sher Zaman, his brother Zubair Mehsud, Alam Sher, Manaan Khan, Sattar, Najeeb, Gul Karim, Rehmat Shah, Inspector Azam Mehsud and others launched a terrorist attack on their police party. The suspects opened straight fire on the police party with the intention to kill, which was retaliated by the police and an encounter ensued during which three personnel, including a constable of Police Qaumi Razaqar, sustained injuries. A civilian Sardar was also injured in the crossfire. However, the suspects managed to escape from the spot under the cover of fire.
However, one of the injured policemen, Constable Rizwan, succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The police booked the suspects under murder, attempt to murder and Section 7 of ATA on the complaint of SI Javed. According to SSP Anwar, one of the suspects Rehmat Shah had provided men for launching terrorist attack on the police party on Sunday morning. He said that they have beefed up intelligence network and hoped that the suspects would be apprehended soon.
