Karachi: JSQM man killed, 5 injured during strike
KARACHI: An office–bearer of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Ghulam Hussain, and an associate of his, Naqqash, who had been shot at in Kalri area during a gun battle in the backdrop of a strike call given by JSQM, died at the Civil Hospital here on Wednesday, police said. In a related incident of violence, five people, including two children, sustained injuries when some unidentified miscreants opened fire on the rickshaw they had been travelling in in the Khada Market area of Lyari, they added.
The condition of the injured, who were identified as Haroon Khan, Omer Khan, Saira Iqbal, eight–year–old Atiya and seven–year–old Shirin, was stated to be out of danger. A bus was also set on fire during violence in Khadda Market.
The Superintendent of Police of City Town, Khurram Waris, confirmed to The News that Ghulam Hussain had been an area leader of JSQM. Police said that it all started when some men resorted to aerial firing and forced the shopkeepers to close their businesses in the Khadda Market and Jokhio Para areas of Kalri.
In the meantime, some people, who, according to the police, belonged to a group loosely referred to as the “Lyari Gangsters”, intervened and told the traders to defy the demand of the protestors to pull their shutters down.
This tug of war between the rival groups soon turned into a gun battle in Nayabad in which Ghulam Hussain, Naqqash and Faizan sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to the Civil Hospital where Ghulam Hussain and Naqqash succumbed to their injuries. The official said that he had called in extra force in Lyari, which brought the situation under control after some hectic efforts and coordination with the Rangers.
Meanwhile, supporters of the deceased JSQM leader staged a protest on the Mauripur Road where they also set ablaze a truck and a bus. However, the protesters dispersed after an assurance from the police that the killers of the local leader of JSQM would be arrested. The law–enforcers also arrested some miscreants.
