Karachi: Bandit kills ‘slow-moving’ rickshaw driver
KARACHI: A rickshaw driver was shot dead on Thursday by a ‘bandit’ when he did not speed up the vehicle as they were being chased by a police patrol in New Karachi, officials said. The three-wheeler overturned as a result of the shooting and the police patrol caught the suspected bandit, said an official at the Sir Syed police station. The official said a passer-by had informed the police patrol about some armed robbers relieving people of their valuables at gunpoint.
Acting on the information, police constable Mohammad Yaseen took up a chase. But the bandits boarded the rickshaw in an attempt to flee. When the rickshaw driver, Riaz Khan, refused to speed up the vehicle, one of the bandits turned jittery and shot at him. Subsequently, the three-wheeler overturned and the driver died on the spot. In the meantime, the official said, the police reached the crime–scene and arrested one of the suspect bandits, while his accomplices managed to flee.
Police claimed to have seized a pistol found in the possession of the suspect identified as Furqan Jumma. The driver’s body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
