Karachi: ‘Gangster’, cop among four held in Lyari
KARACHI: Personnel of the Crime Branch and the City Town police arrested four suspects in Lyari, including a police constable and the son of an assistant sub–inspector of police, in separate raids on Thursday. One of the suspects who was identified as Mulla Nawaz had had a bounty of Rs0.5 million for his arrest. SSP Mohammed Farooq Awan of the Crime Branch said that investigations into the presence of some alleged criminals comprising extortionists and target killers had been under way during which the police were tipped off on the presence of a wanted man, Mulla Nawaz, in Lyari.
Acting on the tip-off, the personnel of the Crime Branch raided the area of Chakiwara on Thursday morning and arrested Mulla Nawaz after a brief encounter and also recovered arms from his possession.
SSP Awan said that Mulla Nawaz was the younger brother of Mulla Latif, who too had been wanted by the police and was killed in an encounter.
He added that Mulla Nawaz bad been wanted by the police in more than 60 cases, including that of murder and extortion. Three more suspects were held by the City Town police in an early morning raid on Thursday.
Police also recovered arms from their possessions. SP Khurram Waris of the City Town police said that he had expanded his intelligence network in Lyari after the law and order situation in the area on Wednesday.
In the meantime, they were tipped off about the presence of some suspects allegedly belonging to the Shiraz Comrade group in the Baghdadi area of Lyari. Acting on the information, he ordered his subordinates to conduct a raid.
The personnel of City Town police raided the Baghdadi area and arrested Kamran alias Kami, Shehbaz and Adnan after a brief encounter and recovered three TT pistols from their possessions.
SP Waris said that Kamran alias Kami, a police constable posted at the Saeedabad Training Centre as a record keeper, had been a close associate of Shiraz Comrade. He added that Shehbaz was the son of an assistant sub–inspector of the Special Branch of Sindh Police.
During the investigations it was found that the suspects had been wanted by the Lyari and City Town police stations in a number of cases, including that of murder and extortion.
