Karachi: Rickshaw driver killed as constable’s heroics foil robbery bid
KARACHI: A rickshaw driver was killed and an outlaw injured in an attempted robbery bid in the New Karachi area on Thursday afternoon. Sub–Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar told The News that on Thursday afternoon, Police Constable (PC) Yasin was on duty at Askari Bank near Nagan Chowrangi when he saw three armed motorcyclists looting members of the public. On seeing the offence he ordered the criminals to surrender, who immediately opened fire on him. PC Yasin returned fire, and during the course of the encounter two of the three criminals fled. PC Yasin then gave chase to the third suspect.
The two battled with each other till UP Moore, where the accused hijacked a rickshaw plying on the road at gun point and sped away. At this point, PC Yasin took help from a motorcyclist in giving chase.
The accused then shot the rickshaw driver, threw his body out of the vehicle and took the wheel. Upon witnessing this offence, the passenger in the back seat jumped out of the vehicle to save his life. The accused then lost control of the vehicle while trying to speed through an intersection, which resulted in the rickshaw overturning.
As he scrambled out of the overturned vehicle, the robber opened fire upon PC Yasin, who retaliated and injured the suspect. Yasin then apprehended the robber, who was found with a TT pistol and a number of looted items.
The rickshaw driver and the accused were subsequently shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where the rickshaw driver expired during treatment. The rickshaw driver was identified as Nazar Mohammed, a resident of Nusrat Bhutto Colony. The robber remains unidentified. Members of the public present at the scene greatly appreciated the heroic efforts made by PC Yasin.
