Karachi: 3 more Lyari ‘gangsters’ held
KARACHI: Three more suspected Lyari gangsters, allegedly belonging to the Uzair Baloch group, were arrested early on Friday morning during a raid by the Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC). The detainees were allegedly involved in several cases of target killing as well as kidnapping for ransom and other crimes.
During a press conference at the Garden Headquarters chaired by SSP Mohammad Aslam Khan and SSP District South, Nasir Aftab, it was stated that the police had been directed to capture criminals who belong to the Uzair Baloch group, also known as the People’s Aman Committee (PAC).
Acting on a tip off, SSPs Khan and Nasir Aftab raided the area. Upon seeing the police, the suspects opened fire and a shootout ensued. Following the encounter, the law enforcers managed to arrest Hassan Ali alias Hasoo alias Papu Kaniya, Mushtaq Pathan and Abid, while their accomplices, including Uzair Baloch, escaped from the scene.
The police also recovered an LMG, five Kalashnikovs, five hand grenades, two G-3 rifles, five TT pistols and around a hundred of bullet of various calibers.SSP Aslam Khan assured that peace would be restored in the restive area of Lyari within a week. He added that the police had expanded their network and would manage to arrest notorious criminals Uzair Jan Baloch and Habib Jan.
SSP Khan recalled that when he was head of the Lyari Task Force, Uzair Baloch was arrested by him, but later released by a court. After getting bail from the court, he started his criminal activities all over again and now he is wanted by the police in 35 cases, including murder and kidnapping for ransom. He also said that Habib Jan is wanted by the police in more than 24 cases.
Khan added that in 2010, Uzair, along with Rashid alias Reekha and others killed a woman in Lyari after suspecting she was spying for the police.Answering a query on the situation in Lyari, SSP Nasir Aftab of District South said that the armed gang war was spreading panic. He said that these criminals carried out organised attacks which targeted policemen and innocent people.
Hassan alias Hasoo, while being interrogated, told the police that in 2008 he and his accomplices got involved in a gun with the rival gang of Arshad Papu on the Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road. While the groups were engaged in a shootout, patrolling policemen reached the spot. The gangsters then attacked the police mobile and their armored personnel carrier (APC), injuring two policemen.
He also confessed to engaging in a shootout with activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), during which an activist of the Karachi-based party was killed. He added that Kalashnikovs were used in this attack.
Hassan also disclosed that he had killed Nadir, a close associate of Ghaffar Zikri in 2007 on Mewa Shah Road. In 2011, he said they killed Jumma alias Haji in Chakiwara area as he was the brother of Mulla Sultan of the Ghaffar Zikri group.
Going further back in time, Hassan said that in 2009, he and his accomplices Abdul Jabbar alias Jeango, Baba Ladla and others attacked the Police Lines in Kalakot with rocket launchers, hand grenades and Kalashnikovs. In 2010, he, Zubair Wehshee and others kidnapped MQM activist Maqbool and took him to Lyari, where they first tortured him and later shot the man dead. He added that the body of Maqbool was dumped in the Chakiwara area.
Abdul Basit, another activist of MQM, was also killed by the same group in 2010 in the Chakiwara area. The suspects also confessed to murdering several other people including political activists and policemen.
