Karachi: ST activist among 5 killed
KARACHI: At least five people, including an activist of the Sunni Tehrik (ST), were killed in different parts of the city on Sunday. Rashid Qadri (25) and Mohammed Yahya (17) were fired upon and seriously injured in Sector–8C, Gulshan–e–Zahoor, in the Brigade police limits early morning. According to SHO Zulqarnain Akhtar, they received information at about 4am that two youngsters were lying in a pool of blood, following which they reached the spot and shifted them to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where they expired during treatment.
Both Rashid and Mohammed Yahya were neighbours and residing in Sector–8B, Gulshan–e-Zahoor. They were standing at Younus Paan Shop in the said area when three men, riding a motorcycle, appeared there and sprayed them with bullets. Both of them received more than five bullets on various parts of their bodies. Police seized 18 empty casings of 9mm pistols from the spot. Rashid was an active member of the ST, while his friend Yahya had no affiliation with any group.
Later, tension gripped the area where armed men resorted to aerial firing and forced the shopkeepers to pull down shutters. According to Yahya’s cousin Ismail, the deceased was an intelligent student in their family and was busy in his matriculation papers.
He took a break from studies to have a Paan and on his way he saw his area friend Rashid and both went to Younus Panwala, when they were killed. Their funeral prayers were offered at Faizan–e–Oliya Masjid in Lines Area, which was attended by a large number of the ST activists. However, police were investigating the matter.
In another early morning incident, an unidentified man was gunned down by two bike riders in Urdu Bazaar area in Arambagh police limits. The deceased received two bullets on his body which caused his instant death. Police seized three empty casings of TT pistol from the spot.
Police did not find any identification card from the deceased’s clothes and he had only 100 rupees in his pocket, saying, he might have been killed in some enmity. Mastan Khan was shot at and seriously injured near Nullah Stop in New Karachi police limits in the afternoon. He was taken to the ASH but he succumbed to his injuries. The deceased received two bullets of 9mm pistol on his body.
Mastan Khan was running bricks business where he was targeted by two unidentified bike riders. Police said there were unconfirmed reports that the deceased had been receiving threats from extortionists and added that they were investigating the matter as to whether he was killed by the same group or murdered in some enmity. The deceased was a resident of the same area and the father of three.
Farooq Khan was stabbed to death outside his house in Pathan Colony in SITE–A police limits in the afternoon. Police said that the deceased was standing outside his house when a suspect came to him, took out a dagger and stabbed Khan to death. Farooq was a labourer by profession.
Meanwhile, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was shot at and seriously injured in Sector–4B, North Karachi, in Surjani Town police limits in the morning. Abdul Mateen of 25–30 years age was sitting outside his house when two men, riding a motorcycle, fired at him and fled. He was moved to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where his condition was said to be critical.
