Karachi: 3 illegally detained men released as bailiff raids police station
KARACHI: Three men, who had been illegally detained by the police, were released on Tuesday after a bailiff raided the police station on orders of the additional district and sessions judge (South). In the raid on the Defence police station, it was found that Muhammad Hussain, Basheer and Sarwar were illegally detained, as the police failed to produce an FIR against the three. The bailiff ordered that the SHO, the duty officer and the investigation officer appear before the court for the hearing of the case on April 19, along with the relevant record.
The action was taken after an application, under Section 491 of the Criminal Procedure Code, was moved by Sultan Mehmood, brother of one of the detainees. It claimed that his brother, along with two other relatives, were picked up from the house two days ago and that they were being illegally detained at the police station as they had not been nominated in any case.
He alleged that the police was demanding a hefty sum for their release, and prayed to the court to take immediate action. This case of illegal detention comes only a week after three women and a minor girl were released from the Gizri police station, where they had been incarcerated without being nominated in any case. A sub–inspector of the Special Investigation Unit, Muneer Chandio, was found responsible for their detention, and suspended.
