Karachi: Constable kills PSF activist in Gulshan
KARACHI: A police constable deputed outside a departmental store in Gulshan-i–Iqbal shot dead a student activist and wounded his friend following an altercation on Wednesday, police said. They said that the incident occurred within the remit of the PIB Colony police station near Hasan Square where Asmat Ali, 25, and his associate Faisal had an altercation with Constable Mirza Haseen Baig upon which the latter opened fire on them.
Asmat Ali died from bullet wounds. Following the incident, activists of the People’s Students Federation took the body to the DIG–East office and staged a sit-in there. The DIG came out of his office and assured the protesters that the police constable concerned would be taken to task. Following the assurance, the students dispersed peacefully.
The police registered a case (FIR 107/2012) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code against the police constable on a complaint of a PSF leader. The police constable was also arrested.
The police said that the victim was a BBA student at the Federal Urdu University and originally hailed from Swat and lived in Micasa Apartments.
However, a senior police officer, requesting anonymity, told Dawn that it was actually a case of extortion and the youth had allegedly gone to the store to seek money.
