Karachi: PPP city ward chief, cop killed in Lyari
KARACHI: Tension gripped the Lyari area after three people, including a policeman and a senior Pakistan People’s Party activist, were killed in separate incidents on Thursday. SSP Mohammad Aslam of the Anti–Extremism Cell (AEC) told The News that a raid was conducted in Moosa Lane in the Baghdadi area early on Thursday morning to arrest wanted gangsters, including Uzair Baloch and Shiraz Comrade. During the raid, he said, gunmen opened fire on the police, who retaliated and arrested Ayaz, a close associate of Shiraz Comrade, in an injured condition. Head Constable Altaf Khan, Sub–Inspector Anwer Lodhi and Police Constable Ghaffar were injured when Uzair and other gangsters fired rockets and lobbed hand grenades at the police before fleeing through narrow lanes.
The injured were taken to the Civil Hospital, where Head Constable Khan died. He was posted at the CID Sindh and was a resident of the Garden area. His funeral prayers took place at the Garden Headquarters, where Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Shah announced a job for one member of the deceased’s family in the police department.
The police took the arrested man to their investigation unit and recovered an AK-47 from his possession. SSP Aslam said Ayaz was wanted in a number of cases related to murder, kidnapping for ransom, extortion and attempt to murder and had been absconding.
The Baghdadi police lodged a murder case on a complaint from SI Lodhi, who nominated as accused Uzair Baloch, Habib Jan Baloch, Zafar Baloch, Waseeullah alias Lakho, Shiraz alias Comrade, Noor Mohammad alias Baba Ladla, Taj Mohammad alias Taju, Umer Katchi, Abdul Jabbar alias Jeango, Fahad Pathan, Faisal Pathan, Shafi Pathan and five others belonging to the banned Peoples Aman Committee. The encounter caused tension in Lyari when gunmen resorted to aerial firing in Lea Market, Gul Mohammad Lane, Moosa Lane, Juna Kalri, Aath Chowk, Shahwaliullah Road and other areas and forced traders to close their shops.
During the law and order situation, gunmen injured three people on Shah Waliullah Road. The injured were taken to the Civil Hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injures. According to hospital sources, the injured was brought in almost dead and had suffered multiple bullet wounds. The identity of the victim could not be ascertained immediately.
In the afternoon, PPP City Ward President Malik Mohammad Khan was heading a rally towards the Clifton area when gunmen opened fire on him near Aath Chowk, Kalakot, critically injuring him. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Khan was a former Nazim of Lyari Town and close friend of MNA Nabeel Gabol. Activists and leaders of the party protested over Khan’s murder and demanded the arrest of the killers. After the target killing, police and Rangers contingents entered the disturbed areas in Lyari and were trying to control the situation late into the night.
In a late-night incident, gunmen shot dead an unidentified man in the Nava Lane area of Lyari. The victim was said to be around 30 years of age. Police suspected the involvement of gangsters in the murder.
