Lahore: 167 people deprived of valuables last week
LAHORE: Model Town police division has become a safe haven for robbers and vehicle thieves as 39 citizens were deprived of valuables worth millions of rupees and eight motorcycles and nine cars were also taken away in its jurisdiction last week. According to data available with The News, Model Town division was top with total 39 reported incidents related to crime against property. Out of the total reported incidents, eight motorcycles and nine cars were also stolen in Ichhra, Faisal Town, Gulberg, Naseerbabad, Ghalib Market, Shadman, Model Town and Garden Town police precincts.
Robbers also shot at and injured Sher Ali in Nishtar Colony and tortured labourers at a local factory in Kahna police limits on resistance. The rate of recovery of stolen vehicles and valuables is also very low in the Model Town division. Efforts were made to contact Model Town SP Maroof Wahla but he did not respond. City police division stood second in heinous crimes during the last week with 37 reported incidents and 14 motorcycles and four cars were also taken away. Shadbagh, Misri Shah and Islampura police limits provided maximum opportunity to robbers to operate. Firing and crime against person also become a routine matter in the areas. SP Umar Virk has recently taken the charge of City police division and if he continued for some time on the same slot, he can bring heinous crimes down, some officials said. Sadar police division secured third position in crime against property with 33 reported incidents out of which five motorcycles and two cars were also stolen. Robbers killed a 60–year–old man in Sattukatla and left three others injured on resistance in Manga Mundi and Green Town police limits. Recently appointed SP Operations Athar Waheed is still busy understanding the nature of crimes in Sadar division while SP Investigations Usman Akram Gondal has yet to assume charge to review the pending cases of heinous crimes. Mustafa Hameed Malik had been transferred within a couple of weeks of his posting as SP Investigations Sadar division after the transfer of SP Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera as SP Headquarters, Lahore.
Cantt police division was fourth with 30 reported incidents out of which nine motorcycles and three cars were also taken away. Robbers also injured three persons on resistance in Defence-B and Burki police limits. SP Operations Imtiaz Sarwar is “trying his best” but positive results are still awaited while SP Anwar Khaitran has recently been appointed SP Investigations Cantt Division from the slot of SP Operations City Division. He will also take some time to improve the performance of his subordinates.
Iqbal Town police division was fifth with 28 reported incidents out of which eight motorcycles and two cars were also taken away. Civil Lines police division was last with 25 reported incidents out of which seven motorcycles and three cars were also taken away.
A senior police officer said that since the transfer of former CCPO Ahmad Raza Tahir, the priority of Lahore police officers was to secure their slots or get themselves transferred instead of controlling crime. He added that criminals were organised and they operated by gauging the command of officers. However, he said that CCPO Aslam Tarin was a crime fighter and would devise some better strategy to curtail heinous crimes.
Moreover, security at sensitive installations including police offices is vulnerable and it could lead to some disaster if proper measures are not taken.
