Karachi: SIU arrests nine suspects in anti-gang war raid
KARACHI: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on Monday morning conducted a raid in the Liaquatabad area and arrested nine suspects, three in an injured condition, belonging to a Lyari gang war group. The police also recovered a huge cache of arms from them.
SSP Khurram Waris of SIU, chairing a press conference in his office, said investigation was conducted after an informant had tipped them off about wanted gansters of Lyari hiding in Illyas Goth. He along with his team conducted a raid but when the miscreants saw the police they opened fire leading to an encounter. During the shootout, the assailants also fired rockets, damaging the police van.
The police responded with crackdown and after a brief encounter managed to arrest Mohammed Ashraf, Mohammed Naeem and Asif Qudoos in an injured condition. In a second encounter, the police arrested another six gangsters, including Mustafa, Wali Mohammed, Abdul Raheem and Qaiser Baloch. The police also recovered two Kalashnikovs, one repeater, two hand-grenades, six pistols and hundreds of bullets.
SSP Waris said those held belonged to the Lyari Gang war group and included close associates of Ahmed Ali Magsi. They are wanted in the cases of murder, targeted killing, kidnapping for ransom and extortion. Moreover, the gangsters were also involved in the murder of Police Constable Irfan of Crime Branch, who they had targeted in the Soldier Bazaar area.
