Peshawar: US consulate employee held for fake number plate
PESHAWAR: An employee of the United States Consulate General in Peshawar was arrested and his vehicle impounded at the East Cantonment Police Station for using a fake number plate, a source confided to The News on Saturday. According to the source, local police stopped the vehicle whose driver claimed he was from the US Consulate. However, the police suspected the vehicle’s number plate to be fake, and this was proved after an investigation was launched. The car also had an unauthorised wireless set, a police official said. The driver, Arshad Mahmood, was brought to the East Cantonment Police Station where a case was registered against him under Sections 420, 468, 471, 476 .
US Consulate officials later approached senior police authorities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the capital city police. However, they were told that the case had already been registered. An officer at the police station, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed to The News that the driver, who was a Pakistani national, was behind bars.
