Mansehra: 12 held for involvement in forced marriage
MANSEHRA: Around 12 people including jirga members were arrested on the order of a local court on Monday in a forced marriage case. Sofia Bibi, 15, whose nikah was solemnised on the orders of a jirga on March 5 with one Mohammad Naveed, had lodged the first information report stating that the jirga had given her in marriage after labelling her ‘perverted’. The police had registered the first information report against 14 people, including the SHO of police station concerned. Judge Rafique Hussain Shah cancelled the pre–arrest bail and ordered the arrest of Mohammad Naveed, Mohammad Hanif, SHO Shad Mohammad Khan, Mohammad Saleem, Qari Abdul Latif, Qari Mohammad Fareed, Khan Bahadar, Mohammad Arshad, Aurangzeb, Khan Mohammad, Mohammad Farooq and Mohammad Javed. The accused were arrested from the court and shifted to the city police lockup.
Qari Mohammad Fareed, who had solemnised Sofia Bibi’s nikah with Mohammad Naveed, was arrested along with others. District Police Officer Mansehra, Ijaz Ahmad Khan had ordered the registration of FIR against the jirga members, station house officer and others at the Lassan Nawab Police Station.
Sofia Bibi had stated in her FIR that her family locked up Mohammad Naveed in a room after he barged into their house along with his accomplice and handed him over to Qari Mushtaq. She complained that instead of punishing the accused and providing her justice, Qari Mushtaq labelled her “perverted” and forced her marriage with Naveed.
