Karachi: MQM, ANP activists among 3 killed
KARACHI: Three people, including activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP) were killed in separate incidents in the city on Tuesday, raising the death-toll from targeted attacks to 7 in the past 48 hours. Mirza Sarfraz Ali, 40, was gunned down on Tuesday morning within Sector–11, near Nishan–i-Haider Chowk, Orangi Town. Ali, who owned a General Store in Sector–12 of Orangi Town, was in Sector–11 for business when two armed motorcyclists gunned him down and then fled.
Law-enforcement officials rushed to the spot upon receiving information, where they found Sarfaraz lying in critical condition. He was expired while being shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), said Sub–Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Tariq Malik.
Police subsequently cordoned off the scene of the crime and called in forensic experts, who recovered eight shells of a pistol which have been sent to the forensics division for testing. During further investigation, it was learnt that Ali was an activist of the MQM and a resident of Sector–12, SDPO Malik added.
Tension subsequently gripped the area, as unidentified armed men resorted to firing and forced the shopkeepers to close businesses.
Probers have termed Ali’s murder as targeted killing. Violence was also reported in the surrounding areas during which unidentified armed motorcyclists killed 35–year–old Naseeb Khan in Qasba Colony.
Khan, a watchman by profession and a resident of Qasba Colony, was on his way to work when two armed motorcyclists gunned him down in Qasba Colony and escaped. Khan was immediately shifted to ASH for treatment, where he later expired.
Probers termed the Khan’s murder as a targeted killing, adding that the deceased was an activist of ANP. The police also found empty bullet shells of a 9mm pistol from the crime–scene, which have been sent to the Sindh Police Lab for forensic tests.
Subsequently, sporadic incidents of firing were reported from the Qasba and Bukahari Colonies till late on Tuesday night. In yet another case, Jumma Khan Baloch alias Kalu, was gunned down on Tuesday evening within Hashim Bagecha Gali in Garden.
Baloch was a resident Hashim Bagecha Gali, and was sitting outside his house when two armed motorcyclists stopped next to him, shot him injured and then fled. Baloch expired while being taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), police said.
The deceased had suffered three bullet wounds to his body, and empty shells of a 9mm pistol were recovered from the scene of the incident. During further investigation, it was learnt that Baloch had a criminal record, however, police is investigating the murder from all angles.
