Karachi: 2-year-old kidnapped by father’s friend recovered
KARACHI: A two–year–old boy was recovered as the police arrested two men from a house in Korangi, on Saturday. Even as the family was happy to receive the baby, the police officials believed that a new trend of earning money in “the shortest possible time” is on the rise in most areas of Karachi. Though the police was successful in arresting two men, Mohammed Yusuf and Mohammad Rehman, the main culprits behind the kidnapping, Ameerullah and Saeedullah, were still at large.
Three days back, baby Samiullah Khan was kidnapped from outside his house in Bawani Chali, SITE, his father said.
Father Afzal Khan said he knew one of the kidnappers, Ameerullah, who was still absconding and used to make phone calls for ransom. “He is a friend. We grew up in Kohat and I know his family too.”
Around 11 am on Wednesday, Ameerullah came to Khan’s house and asked for him. His wife asked him to come back when Khan was back from work.
“As my wife was replying to his questions from inside the house, Ameerullah picked up my son who was playing outside and left quietly,” said the father.
Khan who works at a garment factory was urgently called home where his wife had no clue where their son went.
Local clerics were asked to make announcements from the mosque so that anyone who knows about it comes forward.
It was around 2:30 in the afternoon when Khan received a call on his phone from Ameerullah who asked him not to worry as his son was with him.
The kidnapper asked for Rs. 2 lac in ransom, even as the family was ready to pay the money by taking loan from relatives and friends, the SITE police asked them to wait a while. “We were getting calls after calls to pay the money on time, while the police were making sure they track the kidnappers as well,” Khan said.
SSP SITE Amir Farooqi said that the kidnappers were living in Korangi and were working as labourers.
Bilal Colony was decided as the place. Khan took his nephew with him so that he could also recognise the kidnappers. Even as the two kidnappers stood at a shop with the baby, Khan did not see Ameerullah with them.
“My nephew got hold of one kidnapper’s hand when he was giving money and that’s when the police came in as well,” he said.
Though the baby came home safe and sound, the thought that two of the kidnappers were still absconding worries Khan.
“They are calling me again from different numbers, and asking me for money. I informed the police but I don’t want my child to suffer again,” Khan said.
SSP Farooqi said that the other two kidnappers will be arrested soon but added that the trend of earning money through “short-cuts” could be handled through proper investigation.
