Karachi: Bank robbed of Rs6.8m in Naval Colony
KARACHI: Four armed men robbed Rs6.8 million from a branch of the United Bank Limited (UBL) in the Saeedabad police limits on Monday. Police said two robbers barged into the Naval Colony branch of the bank at about 1:30pm, and entered the bank manager’s room. After a few minutes, their two accomplices broke into the bank, snatched the weapons from the two security guards and took all the bank staffers and clients hostage at gunpoint. The hostages were then told to lie down on the floor.
As two robbers kept guard, the other two collected Rs6.8 million from the cashier and the strong room. The robbers then fled the scene. Shortly afterwards, the bank manager informed police, who arrived at the bank in a mobile van and collected evidence. Police said that they had also secured CCTV footage of the incident.
Bank manager Jalal Deen told the police that the bank had Rs10 million in cash, of which the robbers took away Rs6.8 million, while the rest of Rs3.2 million was lying in the safe. However, no FIR of the incident had been registered till the filing of this report late on Monday night.
Sub Divisional Police Officer Baldia Abdullah Bhutto told The News that the security guards of Shahzad Security Company had been deployed at the bank. He said that since the bank was situated inside the Naval Colony, the navel police were also responsible for the security of the area.
Bank heists are on the rise this year, as at least seven banks have been robbed of hefty amounts in the city Since January 1. The police have failed to apprehend any of the suspects despite the fact that they had CCTV footage of the most of the robberies.
On May 4 six armed men had robbed a UBL branch of more than Rs0.7 million in broad daylight in the Ferozabad police limits. On April 23 six robbers had looted more than Rs 9 million from the Habib Bank in the Tipu Sultan police area. In that heist a security guard had allegedly facilitated the robbers in entering the bank and decamping with the cash.
A bank robbery was committed in Jamshed Quarters on January 31 and another in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on February 7. In the Nazimabad area, a bank was looted on March 6, while another was robbed in Gulberg on April 13.
