Hyderabad: Kidnappers gang identified, say police
HYDERABAD: The Anti–Violence Crime Cell (AVCC) of police is reported to have identified the gang involved in the kidnapping of Dr Aftab Qureshi. The gang has demanded Rs8 million ransom for his release through a cell phone call. An official of the AVCC told Dawn on condition of anonymity over phone from Karachi that the gang led by Ghafoor Bugti is involved in the kidnapping. “The call seeking ransom was made from an area in Balochistan”, he said.
The cell has recovered one Dilshad, a resident of Korangi, during a raid that was carried out for recovery of Qureshi, he said.
“We will reach the kidnappers soon. They made the phone call from Balochistan which we have detected through cell phone call record but we believe that Dr Qureshi is kept somewhere else as per kidnapping methodology”, he said.
The official said that Ghafoor Bugti gang had been involved in kidnapping of Col (rtd) Iftikhar Baig of the Hmadard University who had been recovered, adding that the gang had also kidnapped a retired official of Frontier Constabulary Aneesur Rehman.
He said that the gang was involved in 40 kidnapping cases. It was learnt that the call was made to neurosurgeon’s brother.
