Karachi: 2 political activists among 6 fall prey to violence
KARACHI: Six people, including two political party activists, were killed in separate acts of violence that took place in the metropolis on Thursday. Two Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) activists were killed while two others injured in an attack on a PPP office in Mawach Goth, located within the limits of Saeedabad police station. Four armed men parked their two motorcycles, barged into PPP’s local office and opened indiscriminate fire, killing 28-year-old Ghulam Mustafa Khaskheli on the spot besides injuring Khan Afsar, 45, his son Liaquat and Ajmal. Police shifted the body and injured to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for medico–legal formalities and treatment, where Afsar also succumbed to his injuries.
Soon as the news spread, tension engulfed Mawach Goth and its surrounding areas after unidentified men resorted to aerial firing. Angry mob set blaze tyres and chanted slogans against Lyari gangs, while a massive traffic jam was witnessed on Hub River Road. SHO Tariq Islam said a heavy contingent of police reached the area and dispersed the protesters. President PPP Central Division Sohail Abidi said the victim was an active worker of PPP PS-90 while his younger brother, Edhi Amin Khaskheli, was killed in a similar manner about two years ago. Edhi Amin used to serve as the coordinator to PPP MNA Abdul Qadir Patel while his younger brother, Mustafa, had been playing a vital role for the PPP in Mawach Goth after his murder. Mustafa’s funeral prayer was attended by scores of PPP workers, including MNA Abdul Qadir Patel, MPA Nadeem Ahmed Bhutto and Deputy Secretary Karachi division Suleman Sindhi.
Separately, the son of a PPP worker was shot dead in Orangi Town within the jurisdiction of Pakistan Bazaar police station. Twenty two-year-old Nasrullah alias Bihari son of Moosa Khan was shot twice by unknown armed men. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for an autopsy. SHO Sabir Khan said that victim was mentally handicapped and was the younger son of Moosa Bihari, a prominent PPP activist from Orangi Town.
Separately, two people were killed in Ilyas Goth, Liaquatabad C-1 area within the limits of Super Market police station. SHO SM Raza informed that the casualties came as a result of clash between two groups. Police shifted victims’ bodies to the ASH where one of them was identified as Naeem Baloch son of Ismail Baloch. SHO Raza said the victim was a resident of Ilyas Goth and had been associated with the Arshad Pappu group, adding that his rival group might be responsible for murder. Police sources said heavy contingent of Rangers conducted a targeted operation in the area in Thursday’s wee hours. Soon as they retreated, unidentified armed men fired shots toward Ilyas Goth from Haji Murid Goth that resulted in the casualties.
Soon after the incident, unidentified armed men attacked a passenger bus at Teen Hatti area within the precincts of Jamshed Quarters police station. According to bus conductor Riaz, two men came running and boarded the bus. “I told them that the bus is not going anywhere when they tried to board but they pushed me aside”, the conductor said, adding, “Soon, around three armed men on two motorcycles arrived, one of whom boarded the bus and shot both.” Resultantly, Arif Baloch alias Mama, son of Khuda Bux, died on the spot while Owais Baloch received serious injuries. Police shifted the body and injured to the ASH for medico–legal formalities and treatment. DSP Qaiser Ali Shah informed that victim was a resident of Faqeer Colony, Orangi Town.
