Karachi: Hundreds of illegal immigrants disappear in Pakistan
KARACHI: Hundreds of illegal immigrants from 79 countries, including the United States of America, Germany, Switzerland, Israel, France, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Canada, Lebanon, Morocco, Turkey, China, and Albania, registered during the 90s with the National Aliens Registrations Authority (Nara) have disappeared in Pakistan during the last four years because of the mismanagement and leniency of the interior ministry.
The number of illegal immigrants in the country has crossed six million. But the figures of those registered with the Nara are stuck at 126,988 due to political considerations.
Deputy Director Nara Syed Nayab Hasan Zaidi told this correspondent that registration of illegal immigrants was continuing but during the last four months, no identity cards had been issued to them due to a fault in the computer software. He said the data of 125,000 illegal immigrants had been recovered and soon Nara cards will be issued to them. Until that happened, they are being issued registration certificates, Zaidi said.
