Karachi: ‘Killer’ arrested
KARACHI: Sub–Divisional Police Officer Chaudhry Pervez Iqbal told The News that the alleged rapist and killer of Erum had been arrested on Saturday evening. He said he had consulted SP Gulshan Range Abdus Salam Sheikh and sought his help to arrest the culprit by tracking the mobile phone number on which the girl’s family had received two calls. During the tracking, a suspect was located in Hyderabad two weeks back. On Saturday evening, police were tipped off that the suspect was hiding in Jamshed Quarters. At this, the SDPO ordered a raid. The SHOs of Mobina Town and Brigade led the raid and arrested the suspect, identified as Waheed Khan.
During the interrogation, the suspect told the police that he kidnapped Erum on May 1 and took her to his quarter in Sachal area, where he sexually assaulted the girl and strangulated her. He then dumped the body in a plot.
The SDPO said that after killing the girl, the suspect phoned Erum’s family and demanded ransom in order to give the incident the colour of a kidnapping for ransom. The made a second phone call and later ended contact with the family.
SDPO Iqbal said that Waheed Khan was a habitual criminal and his wife had divorced him due to his criminal activities in 2000. He hails from Mansehra. He was also allegedly involved in a bank robbery case registered at the Yousuf Plaza police station. His accomplices were arrested in the case and he was declared an absconder by a court of law.
