Rawalpindi: Bid to smuggle 7 kilograms of heroin to France foiled
RAWALPINDI: Foiling an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of drugs to France and other European countries, the Pakistan Customs has seized seven kilograms of heroin powder in the wee hours of Sunday and arrested a Pakistan-origin Spanish man from the Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) in this connection. According to sources in customs, heroin was cleverly concealed in ‘factory made cavities’ in suitcases, which could not even be detected by scanning machines. The arrested man is a member of the international drug mafia having links with drug–dealing gangs based in Pakistan, sources said while quoting his initial statement during preliminary investigation.
Sources said that Deputy Collector Customs Syed Imran Sajjad Bokhari, upon receiving information from the intelligence network that a huge quantity of heroin would be smuggled to France by international drug smugglers, reached the airport at 2 a.m. on Sunday to supervise checking of passengers. He asked the customs staff to scan the baggage of suspicious passengers thoroughly when the Emirate’s Airline EK–615 flight was scheduled to fly at 3:10 a.m.
During checking, the customs staff intercepted a suspicious passenger and took him to the interrogation room where he lost control over his senses, sources said. Sources added that on the other side, personnel of the customs recovered seven kilograms of heroin powder concealed in specially-made cavities and filled in cigarette packets.
The arrested man was identified as Mohammad Azam, son of Sardar, resident of Village Ghekar Kalan, Gujrat, having passport number KG-857559. Sources said that he was proceeding to France via Dubai by EK-615 at 3:10 a.m.
Deputy Collector Customs Syed Imran Sajjad Bokhari, when contacted by ‘The News,’ termed it a great breakthrough, saying that the customs staff has foiled an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of heroin to European countries. He said that the arrest would help in smashing the drug mafia active in Pakistan.
He said that one of the gang members came with the suspect to the airport but sneaked away after receiving information of his arrest.
