Lahore: Police torture ‘claims’ life
LAHORE: A man was tortured to death allegedly by Liaqatabad police during interrogation on Friday. However, police have denied the allegations saying that the accused’s condition went critical accidentally after which he was rushed to a local hospital where he died. The victim was identified as Sajid alias Ganga, 30, a resident of Akbar Shaheed Road, Liaqatabad. It is learnt that the deceased was in the jail in different cases of dacoity and police encounter. Incharge Investigation Liaqatabad police SI Abdul Ghafoor took him into custody in a case (139/11) of theft after obtaining his two–day remand from the court. The police had to present Sajid before the court on Friday but he died at the police station due to the alleged torture of police in the wee hours. Police removed the body to morgue for autopsy.
The family of Sajid alleged that the investigators were demanding money from them for releasing him (Sajid). After they failed to give bribe to the police, they subjected him to severe torture which claimed his life.
The victim’s family also staged a protest demonstration against police and demanded action against the accused cops. No action was taken against accused cops till the filing of this report.
