Lahore: 7 smugglers killed in 4 years
LAHORE: A spokesman of the Pakistan Rangers Punjab claimed on Saturday to have killed seven and arrested 48 smugglers, and recovered hundreds of liquor bottles from their possession, in the past four years. He said that Rangers jawans also recovered 42kg heroin from the possession of smugglers and 88 cases were registered against them. The spokesman further said that during 2009 Rangers jawans killed three smugglers and arrested 22; recovered 1,173 Indian liquor bottles; seized 15kg heroin; and registered 28 cases.
In the year 2010, five smugglers were arrested and the Rangers recovered 823 bottles of Indian liquor and 900 grams heroin. Also, 22 cases were registered against different smugglers. Last year, four smugglers were killed and 21 arrested, and 863 liquor bottles were recovered from their possession and 26kg heroin was seized. The Rangers got 34 cases registered with local police during this period.
In the current year, so far no smuggler has been killed or arrested and no heroin has been seized, while only six Indian liquor bottles were seized which the smugglers threw and managed to escape back to the Indian side. Four cases were registered during this period.
It is worth mentioning here that delegations of forces of the two countries, Pakistan Rangers and Indian Border Security Force, meet at the Wagah Joint Check-post for a quarterly co-ordination meeting. The meeting is a part of a mutually agreed programme aimed at evaluating measures by both forces for managing border duties.
