Karachi: Over Rs33.55m looted in 9 bank robberies in 6 months
KARACHI: Over Rs33.55 million has been looted in 9 bank robberies during the first 6 months of the current year from (January to June 2012). The increasing number of bank robberies undoubtedly has raised a question mark over the performance of police and other law enforcing agencies (LEAs), however; the utilisation of the looted amount is also a matter of concerned for government and LEAs’ high-ups. Recently, two back to back bank robberies witnessed on June 14 and June 15, in which the robbers had looted Rs 2.35 million from a branch of private bank located in Gulberg Block No. 10 and Rs 4.5 million from a bank’s branch situated in Nazimabad area.
First incident of bank robbery of the year 2012 was reported on January 8, in which the robbers looted Rs 1.25 from a private bank branch located near Sakhi Hasan.
The second bank robbery of Rs1 million was committed on January 31 at a private bank branch near Islamia College.
The third bank robbery was reported on April 13, in Rs 2.12 million looted from a private bank branch located in F B Area. The fourth and the biggest bank robbery was committed on April 24 in which the robbers looted Rs 9.5 million from a private bank branch situated at Tipu Sultan Road.
Two bank robberies were also committed in the month of May. The fifth bank robbery was reported on May 4 of Rs 0.7 million at a bank branch located at Kashmir Road while Rs 6.8 million looted on May 14 from a bank branch situated at Naval Colony, Baldia Town.
When contacted, SP SIU Shahjahan told Pakistan State Times that it is impossible for the police department to provide proper security to all bank branches of the city, as the department has limited personnel and resources.
“We suggested to all bank managements to establish at least one bunker outside its branches for security purpose, but they do not take the suggestion seriously”, SP added.
It is pertinent to mention here that a total of 17 bank robberies were reported in last year while 9 of robberies reported only in first 6 months of the current year.
