Lahore: Killer at large, traders in streets
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered the City police to arrest former Lahore Commissioner Khusro Pervez in connection with the murder of a 22–year–old college boy, a senior police officer disclosed to The Nation on Wednesday. Sources revealed that the chief minister issued these instructions to the police after Shan Muhammad Khusro, son of Khusro Pervez, escaped from a local court after a judge dismissed his pre–arrest bail plea. Shan Khusro is accused of shooting and killing his best friend, Hamza Elahi, son a local trader Sheikh Fazal Elahi.
“The chief minister has asked the police to arrest Khusro Pervez if he fails to produce his son before the investigators within 24 hours. We have worked with Khusro, also former Punjab home secretary, in the past but now we have to know what type of a person he is. In fact, he is a liar and protecting a killer,” the police officer said on condition of anonymity.
When pointed out that Khusro Pervez, who is currently serving as additional federal secretary in the Economic Division, was not nominated as accused in the murder FIR, the officer replied: “The police arrest the close relatives if the main accused remains at large. In this case, Pervez is providing shelter to a killer.” Police sources further revealed that raids are underway in different parts of the province to arrest the killer.
Punjab Law Minister Rana Sana Ullah and senior police officers are holding ‘series of meetings’ to resolve the dispute for the last couple of days, a source in the Punjab government said. According to him, the former Punjab home secretary is giving a bad name to the provincial government because the traders are on streets, protesting against the government and the police, and demanding justice.
Last week, hundreds of traders blocked the road near the Shah Alam market and staged a protest demonstration against the murder of Hamza Elahi, demanding immediate arrest of the killer. The traders also chanted slogans against the government and the police.
On Monday, a judge dismissed the pre–arrest bail plea of Shan Muhammad Khan Khusro because the accused did not appear before the court. The bail petition stated that Hamza Elahi had been shot dead accidentally and there was no evidence that he was murdered by Shan.
Police sources revealed that the influential Khusro was reluctant to hand over the alleged killer to the police for interrogation despite the fact that Shan Khusro was nominated as accused in the FIR. The police registered a murder case against the son of Khusro Pervez (under section 302) on the complaint of Fazal Elahi, father of the deceased.
