Lahore: 2 prisoners shot dead at district courts
LAHORE: A prisoner was killed by police after he shot dead another prisoner on the premises of District and Sessions Court on Saturday. The prisoner shot dead was identified as Shafqat Nazeer, a resident of Township while the other prisoner killed in by police was identified as Azam, a resident of Sahiwal. Both the prisoners were present on the premises of the session’s court regarding proceedings of their cases. It is learnt that Shafaqt Nazeer was a murder accused nominated in a case number 949/10 registered at Township Police Station, facing a murder trial in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Malik Mushtaq. While Azam was a narcotics accused and Additional District and Sessions Judge Nisar Ahmed Khan was holding his trial in a case registered at Lower Mall Police Station. On Saturday, at about 11:00am police produced Shafqat in the court of the judge concerned but brought him back to the Bakhshi–Khana without any proceedings due to lawyers strike. The other prisoner Azam was brought to Bakhshi Khana from Sahiwal for his case proceedings.
In the lock, Azam shot Nazeer dead due to their old rivalry. However, the police deployed at Bakhshi Khana shot dead the assailant prisoner after retaliating for 45 minutes.
Eyewitness informed The News that both prisoners had exchanged harsh words in the Bakhshi Khana after which Azam had opened gunfire and killed Shafqat.
They said that Azam, after killing Shafqat, panicked as police had cordoned off the whole area. In panic, he started indiscriminate firing. They said that Azam fired more than 20 bullets with his 30 bore pistol in 45 minutes. Police retaliated and killed him encounter.
It is learnt that the whole staff of the Bakhshi Khana has been suspended after occurrence of the incident.
Islampura Police arrested police officials, including ASI Manzoor, Fiaz, Sharif, Yasin and Waseem for their alleged negligence due to which prisoner managed taking weapon not only in the premises of Sessions court but also in Bakhshi Khana.
It is not clear how Azam managed to bring a weapon in the premises of session’s court.
It is pertinent to mention that Azam was brought from Sahiwal but nobody bothered to frisk him, neither in the jail police nor in Bakhshi Khana security staff.
The Lahore Bar Association announced a strike on July 2 to condemn the security lapse. On the hand, court staffers say that such security lapses happen only due to lawyers as they do not allow security officials to frisk them before checking in.
